From 1-10, What Are The Chances Of Business Startup Success?

February 7th, 2010

On a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high), what are the chances of starting a successful business? That is a truly great question.

Notably, there is more than one answer. The type of business must be considered in the formulation of any kind of semi-accurate reply.

For example, getting into the restaurant business has a low chance of success. Opening a McDonald’s however has a high chance of success should the huge franchise fee amount paid up front be available without strings attached.

Many in the world of small business will say that it is all about location, location, location. Others will insist that the bottom line is cash flow. With good cash flow comes a better chance of success, without it comes almost assured failure.

In other words the variables are numerous and there is almost no one shoe fits all answer. One thing for sure is that regardless of the what, where, when, who and how factors in getting into business, there is risk. Success cannot be guaranteed in the free market.

Having gotten all of that established it is now time to kick this matter into reverse, back up a bit and acknowledge that there is a low risk way to get into business that brings with it a reasonably high opportunity for success.

The cash costs for starting are very low. The sweat equity however is much higher. Like all businesses, you have to put in your time and make a meaningful effort.

Location is not a factor. You can be physically located wherever you choose and you can do business with customers or clients almost anywhere.

Because start-up and ongoing overhead is low, cash flow is generally not an issue other than possibly in the first 90 days. But the emphasis here is that with little cash out, even those first 90 days are very manageable.

It is a learn as you go business for those with no particular expertise to begin with and a great business for those who bring some experience to the table. The training required is not complicated and is available whenever it is needed. Because it is self paced, it can be done quickly or spread out over time.

Importantly, it is a business that supplies all of the resources necessary to succeed. Additionally, mentoring is provided along with access to others involved in the same industry who can supply a never ending list of best practices. Thus a newbie is not the lone ranger. There is plenty of assistance and endless help resources available at every turn.

But do not be side tracked into thinking this business is a lock. Just like every other kind of market place endeavor, there are no guarantees. You can fail at this just like you can at anything else.

In this case however, the risk of failure is greatly diminished. In fact, if you bring the determination to see the job through to this business on the front end and just stick with it until you make the progress required, there is almost no chance of failure.

Needless to say, just like anywhere else, you cannot be easily discouraged or tempted to quit. That would guarantee failure. Staying on track will in most all cases lead to a successful business start-up.

You may have deduced by now that we are referring to starting, building and maintaining an online business. Make it the one of your choice but make sure to learn what is required to succeed at Internet marketing.
